1 min read
Selection of premium tequila and mezcal bottles at Chula's Mexican-Latin Food & Spirits, showcasing the differences between tequila vs. mezcal.

Many people assume tequila and mezcal are the same.

They’re actually close cousins, but each offers a completely different experience.

What is Tequila?

Tequila is made exclusively from Blue Weber Agave and is primarily produced in Jalisco, Mexico.

It tends to have:

  • Bright citrus notes

  • Peppery spice

  • Herbal aromas

  • Smooth finish

What is Mezcal?

Mezcal can be made from dozens of different agave varieties.

Before distillation, the agave is roasted in underground pits, creating its signature smoky flavor.

Expect:

  • Smoke

  • Earthiness

  • Rich complexity

  • Unique regional characteristics

Which One Should You Try?

If you’re new to agave spirits, tequila is often the easiest introduction.

If you enjoy whiskey, bourbon, or Scotch, mezcal may surprise you with its layered smoky character.

At Chula’s, our tequila and mezcal selection allows guests to explore both styles through curated flights, handcrafted cocktails, and recommendations from our knowledgeable bartenders.
